Oregon Medicare Plans

Thousands of beneficiaries have enrolled into Oregon Medicare Plans. As you do your research, be aware that Medicare Supplements in Oregon have the same benefits as supplements sold in any other state.

Residents can enroll in an Oregon Medicare supplement during their open enrollment period without health questions. The initial enrollment period for Medigap begins on your Part B effective date and runs for 6 months. Because there is no medical underwriting during this period, it is considered the best time to buy an Oregon Medicare supplement.

After that window expires, changing your Oregon Medicare supplement will usually require you to answer health questions. However, Oregon has a special birthday rule that you can also exercise once per year IF you already have a Medicare supplement and wish to switch to another supplement of equal or lesser benefit.

Oregon Medicare Supplements Birthday Rule

People with Oregon Medigap plans can change their Medicare supplement once per year during their birthday month. The enrollment period begins on Medicare beneficiary’s birthday and last for 30 days. There is no underwriting. You will not answer any health questions.

Known as the birthday rule, Oregon’s new enrollment window is modeled after a similar rule in California. The rule is designed to keep seniors from being trapped into a Medicare supplement that has high rate increases. Legislators hope that competition between insurance plans will help to keep rates down overall.

To take advantage of the birthday rule, you must already be enrolled in a standard Oregon Medigap plan. You must be switching into the same policy or one with lesser benefits than your current policy. So for example, if you have Oregon Medicare Supplement Plan G, you could switch to another Plan G or Plan N, but not a Plan F.

You cannot use the birthday rule to get a Oregon Medicare supplement for the first time.

Medicare Supplemental Plans Oregon

Oregon Medicare supplements help to pay for things that Medicare does not cover. This includes your deductibles for hospital and outpatient. Oregon Medicare Supplement Plans also pay the 20% of your outpatient visits that Medicare does not pay.

Medicare Supplements in Oregon cover all the same Medicare Part A and B benefits that plans in other states cover. In the hospital, your Oregon Medicare Supplement will pay for your room and board during your inpatient stay, skilled nursing facility needs, blood transfusions and hospice.

On an outpatient basis, your Oregon Medigap plan benefits include doctor visits, labwork, durable medical equipment, surgeries and much more.

To be eligible for Oregon Medicare Supplement insurance, you must first enroll in Medicare Parts A and B. Most people purchase their Medicare supplement in their home state, but your coverage will be nationwide.

Remember, if you enroll in your Oregon Medigap plan during the first six months after your Part B effective date, you will not have to answer any health questions on your application. During this one-time window, they cannot turn you down for pre-existing conditions either.
